Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a major health publication shows that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals buying these drugs need to be aware of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a return to original mass within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually see a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Experts suggest the way of the injections explains the accelerated rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

Health authorities advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Testimonies

People who have stopped the medication explain a intense resurgence of hunger.

"It was like a switch activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," described one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among females than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural management.
