The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Each time a prominent prize-giving event approaches, there’s always a clamor for the addition fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types actually cover numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Which classification works among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything that year
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked that year
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often small games, however the design behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles globally and have been for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
