Seven accused individuals of German left-wing extremist group stand trial over series of violent incidents

Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network went on trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the moniker “the hammer group”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Earlier this month, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist group along with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the group was responsible for attacks on sites in Germany and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are said to have using hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering known as the “day of honour” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted assault against far-right activists prior to the identical event in 2023.

Historical background and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a senior figure within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities overseen by Paul M, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Previous convictions and international reactions

Another militant formerly involved with the group, Lina E, became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the US, freezes any assets they may have within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have received convictions or are in custody.”
