Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for several hours when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
