The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
