Around fifty vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to police.
Cars, exterior walls and mailboxes were marked, in some cases with swastikas, they stated in a release.
Police state they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a individual observed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued substance.
The fluid had been drawn in the shape of a banned symbol, they reported.
Officers then discovered numerous other vandalized cars and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation banning the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.
Police state initial examinations show the substance was likely human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no lead as to its source; authorities are currently not cognizant of any injuries in relation with the occurrence," they stated.
Local authorities stated they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the public for tips.
A high-ranking official commented the vandalism rendered him without words and had to be addressed rapidly.
"This incident affects the center of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the far-right attack in 2020," he posted on online, referring to the murder of nine individuals by a assailant targeting residents of migrant background in February 2020.
